Workshop Description:
This five-day workshop will exceed your expectations in every way. By focusing on the practical application of the science of learning and behavior you will develop skills to shape and modify even the most challenging behaviors. Under the leadership of Steve Martin and Susan Friedman, Ph.D, this workshop offers a balance of insightful lectures and hands-on experience with a wide variety of species of birds from our extensive collection, providing the ideal setting to accommodate various training skill levels. Our expert bird trainers lead each small team of participants in hands-on interactions as they put into practice the information they have learned in the lectures. Working in small groups with teammates from a variety of backgrounds and skill levels allows participants to have the opportunity to achieve both personal training goals and solutions to assigned group behavioral challenges in a stimulating and supportive team environment.

Workshop Leaders: Steve Martin and Susan Friedman, Ph.D.
Steve Martin
Steve Martin has lived with parrots from the time he was five years old. By the time he was 16 his bird interest expanded to falconry and he has been a Master Falconer ever since. He began his professional animal training career when he set up the first of its kind, free-flight bird show at the San Diego Wild Animal Park in 1976. Since then, he has produced educational animal programs or consulted on animal behavior issues at over 50 zoological facilities in eleven countries
Steve has produced three videos on parrot behavior & training, and lectures frequently about parrot behavior. He has also written several articles on animal behavior and conducts training workshops each year at his facility in Winter Haven, Florida. Over two-thirds of his year is spent on the road consulting with zoos and aquariums on animal behavior issues or teaching staff the art and science of animal behavior.
Susan Friedman, Ph.D.
Susan is a psychology professor at Utah State University who has pioneered the application of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to captive and companion animals. ABA, with its roots in human learning, offers a scientifically sound teaching technology and ethical standard that can improve the lives of all learners. Students from 22 different countries have participated in Susan's online courses. She has written chapters on learning and behavior for three veterinary texts; her articles have been translated into ten languages. Susan has presented seminars for a wide variety of professional organizations around the world and is a frequent contributor to NEI training workshops.
